The reboot is an attempt to take audiences back to what they love about the first film. This reboot may have just arrived at the right time, especially since Disney has realized the glaring problem of dwindling earnings in the Pirates sequels. According to The Numbers, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" earned the lowest in the domestic box office for the entire franchise. That still comes as a blow despite "Stranger Tides" being the second highest-grossing Pirates film in the worldwide box office. It's no wonder then that Disney would think of ways to rejuvenate the franchise with a reboot.
Coming Soon has already posted the film synopsis and cast details of the sequel. Dead Men Tell No Tales sees Johnny Depp reprising his role as flighty Captain Jack Sparrow, who's on a quest to find the mythical trident of Poseidon, god of the seas. According to legend, whoever possesses this magical object has the power to control the seas. Sparrow plans to use the trident in his forthcoming battle with Captain Salazar, his nemesis, played by award-winning actor,
Javier Bardem ("No Country for Old Men", "Skyfall"). He is on a mission to exact revenge on Sparrow, blaming him for the death of his brother. Sparrow's story arc will intersect with Henry Turner's quest to find his long-lost father, and Carina Smyth's possession of a diary that contains clues to the whereabouts of Poseidon's trident. Henry Turner, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann's grown-up son, will be played by Brenton Thwaites. Kaya Scodelario stars as Carina Smyth, an astronomer and Henry's love interest.

Elements fans of the first film would find familiar would be a nemesis of Sparrow out for revenge, a ghost pirate crew, the search for a mythical artifact, the search for a long-lost father, a blossoming love story, and a formidable female character. According to Movie Pilot, Scodelario says that the reboot has an epic journey element, and that the producers wanted it to tie up loose ends and also have the potential to lead to new interesting storylines.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will premiere in theaters worldwide on July 7, 2017.
