We conduct research in areas that synthesize the fields of robotics, machine design, human factors, and dynamic control
. Our human-machine interaction laboratories explore the physical human-machine interface via mechanical designs and control algorithms that merge machine dynamics and the kinesthetic sense. We study haptic interfaces, sonification of physical signals and understanding how to convey data to human beings in a way that is natural and effective. Our research finds application in user interface design, prosthetics and rehabilitation therapies.
Our robotics laboratories conduct research on robot dynamics and dextrous manipulation. We investigate the design and control of end effectors and new methods of locomotion to increase the capabilities of robots in unstructured settings. Our projects aim to develop innovative capabilities by designing hardware that synthesizes sensing, action and control in novel ways. Our research has application in service robotics and hazardous environments where our findings can be used to reduce the hazards or drudgery presently faced by humans
