The city of Molde is home to Norway's oldest jazz festival.                                                                                  outdoor adventures and some of the longest, brightest summer days in the world. When planning your trip to Norway, check a calendar for the many festivals and celebrations held throughout the year for a glimpse at the culture of the people dwelling amid Norway's majestic beauty. While the country hosts dozens of festivals and celebrations each year, a few stand out above the rest for their sizable

Bergen International Festival

Rated
by Frommer's as one of Norway's best celebrations, the Bergen International Festival (fib.no/en) takes place at the end of May and beginning of June. Performing artists from Norway and abroad descend on the city of Bergen, with a focus on city native pianist Edvard Grieg. Throughout the course of the 15-day festival, more than 60,000 visitors enjoy more than 150 musical, theatrical, dance and other visual arts performances in nearly a dozen venues across the city, including Troldhaugen, Grieg's former home.

Constitution Day

Every May 17 Norwegians celebrate Constitution Day honoring the 1814 official split from Denmark. Beginning in the early hours of the morning, children and adults don bunads, the traditional costumes of their native regions, and take to the streets to the sounds of marching bands. Children wave flags during the processions held throughout the country, while the Norwegian royal family waves to passersby in Oslo's Royal Palace Square

Midsummer Night

Midsummer Night, also called St. John's Eve, celebrates the longest and brightest day of the year throughout Norway. Revelers light bonfires, especially along Norway's coasts, and stay up as long as possible, dining on sour cream porridge and barbecued meats with family and friends. Young girls traditionally place seven flowers beneath their pillows in hopes of dreaming of their future husbands.

Other Festivals

Throughout the year, Norway plays host to dozens of music, film, sports and other cultural festivals. Some of the largest include the Norwegian Wood rock music festival in Oslo each June, the Molde International Jazz Festival -- the country's oldest and largest -- the Oya outdoor music festival in Oslo and Holmenkollen Ski Festival taking place each March at the Holmenkollen Ski Jump.
